Qualification summary

The qualification aims to provide candidates with an introduction to the processes and principles of adult learning. It offers them an opportunity to be supported in developing the knowledge of how to plan, design, deliver, manage, facilitate and review learning sessions in sport.

This is achieved through understanding and application of the underpinning knowledge requirements of the Employment National Occupational Standards for Learning and Development and Assessment and Verification.

Achievement of this qualification could enable candidates to secure employment or work as a tutor, delivering learning sessions/programmes such as Governing Body of Sport awards or a variety of vocationally-related qualifications in sport.

Candidates who achieve this qualification may wish to gather further evidence of their role towards specific units of, or the NVQs in, Learning and Development at Levels 3 or 4.

Achievement of these units can only be via an NVQ recognised centre accredited to offer these particular units and/or qualifications.

Further Learning Opportunities

Candidates may wish to progress by completing a higher-level award, such as an NVQ Level 3/4 in Assessment and Verification/ Learning and Development or undertake further training and/or learning opportunities to increase their knowledge of generic tutoring methods and practices. Other qualifications to which candidates might aspire to may include the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Mentoring in Sport, the 1st4sport Level 3 Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Internal Verification Practice in Sport. Candidates wishing to progress their knowledge of practices in a specific area of interest might undertake workshops and/or alternative learning opportunities offered by other relevant organisations, such as sports coach UK.

Independent Assessment

This assessment requires candidates to produce the following:
§ a minimum of one appropriate learning session plan and associated resources to support the learning process and a 1 hour learning session
§ an observation (against the criteria identified in Part Two of the Candidate Pack on page 41), by an appropriately qualified independent assessor, of the delivery of the above planned session. This session should:
§ be in a discipline/ area in which candidates are competent/ qualified to deliver
§ ideally last 1 hour
§ consist of a ½ hr practical/ in-the-field activity and a ½ hr theory/ classroom based activity, wherever possible
§ ideally take place in the candidates natural working/ sport environment
§ take place after candidates have had the opportunity to practice and refine the skills learnt on the programme of training, on a minimum of three occasions
§ an evaluation and reflective review for the above learning session
§ a personal action plan following the delivery of the session
§ a completed Supplementary Questions sheet
§ evidence of candidates having a professional discussion with an independent assessor. Independent assessors may use feedback and action points from previous assessments in order to form areas for further discussion.

NB - Where direct observation is not possible/ appropriate, simulation may be used. However the simulated activity must be in a discipline/ area in which candidates are competent/ qualified to deliver.
The qualification composes of one Unit which is made up of four elements.
