Qualification summary
The Level 2 Award in Coaching Studies has been developed to provide learners aged 14 years of age and above, with an introduction to the principles of coaching. This includes both the practical and theoretical aspects of the coaching process.
The L2ACS does not qualify candidates to coach a particular sport. However, it will enable candidates to develop and acquire a basic understanding of how to plan, organise and deliver a variety of sports or games related activities under supervision. It will also provide an appreciation of the coaching process, the benefits of exercise, healthy lifestyle, safe practice and ethics in sport.
The aim is to provide candidates with an introduction to the basic principles of the coaching. It has been designed to enable candidates to study both the theoretical and practical aspects of the coaching process. It offers candidates the opportunity to promote their knowledge and understanding of:
equal opportunities, ethics and fair play in sport
the health benefits and risks associated with sport and physical activity
the fundamental principles relating to nutrition, psychology, anatomy and physiology in sport
the coaching process
how to plan and deliver a range of sports or games coaching sessions
how to apply the rules of selected sports or games
how to evaluate and improve personal coaching practice/performance

Holders of this Award may wish to gather further evidence of their coaching of adults and children, towards a Level 2 sport-specific vocationally-related qualification or a Level 2 NVQ in Sport, Recreation and Allied Occupations: Coaching, Teaching, Instructing. The aspiration is also for the qualification to support the SkillsActive Apprenticeship Framework as a technical certificate.

Practical Demonstration / Assignment
There are 2 types of assessment for this qualification. Internal assessment and Independent assessment. The independent assessment for the qualification consists of the completion of 2 written tasks/assignments. The independent assessment has been designed to assess candidates underpinning knowledge of the components of fitness, diet and nutrition to support their understanding of the coaching process. The tasks include the following

Task 12 - Diet and Nutrition
Each task requires the candidate to complete a series of questions and/or assignments. The total marks for each task total 25 marks. The pass mark for each task is 20. The tasks are open book and centres can allocate their own timeframe for the completion of each independently assessed task.
The internal assessment consist of tasks to assess knowledge and understanding of equity in coaching, the coaching process, planning, practical coaching and evaluation.
The award consists of 4 mandatory units
