Qualification summary
To provide a qualification for people involved in supporting the development of others in a variety of sport roles and environments. The qualification aims to provide a framework within which people interested in acting as mentors for coaches, sports officials, sports administrators, sports development officers, educators, or those in outdoor education can be developed to fulfil this role within a credible and equitable programme of learning and assessment.
This qualification builds on the current suite of the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (100/4862/5) 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in an Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport (100/4181/3) and 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Internal Verification Practice in Sport (500/1379/8).

Holders of this Certificate are qualified to seek paid or unpaid employment as a mentor in a number of sport environments, providing support to people who may be in a variety of roles. In many areas of sport mentors are encouraged to provide their services under the auspices of the national or local governing body for the sport/activity concerned. Holders of this qualification are encouraged to offer their services within the professional structures of sport, where such exist.
Candidates may wish to go on to gather further evidence of their competence towards specified N/SVQ Units from the ENTO National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Coaching and Mentoring.
Other professional areas that this qualification may lead to include the possibility of becoming a learning mentor within a school or college. Learning mentors are salaried staff who work with students and pupils to help them address barriers to learning. They bridge academic and pastoral support roles with the aim of ensuring pupils and students engage more effectively in learning and achieve appropriately. All aspects of the assessment specification are independently assessed. The assessment specification is contained within all appropriate documents. The L3CMS Candidate Pack presents a template for holistic assessment via a series of assessed tasks for candidates to complete and their mapping to the units of the qualification.
The qualification is composed of four mandatory units.
