1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in the Treatment and Management of Injury in Sport

Qualification summary

To provide candidates with the specific basic knowledge and skills necessary to enable them to recognise, treat and manage common injuries sustained in sport/fitness using an appropriate code of conduct.

The qualification offers an opportunity for newcomers to this sector to recognise and differentiate major from minor injuries and the ability to offer basic treatment and injury management advice to an athlete who has sustained an injury. This is achieved through an understanding and the application of the underpinning knowledge contained within the National Occupational Standards for Sports Therapy.

Those holding the qualification may seek employment (paid or unpaid) as an assistant sport therapist for an amateur or semi professional sports club or within fitness based environment. It may also be used as a stepping-stone to achieve individual units of the national occupational standards for sports therapy. At this time there are no NVQs accredited in Sports Therapy therefore holders of this qualification may wish to progress to the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in the Treatment and Management of Injury in Football (L3TMI). The L3TMI is also to be revised over the next 12 months to be a generic qualification.

Written Examination
To achieve the qualification, candidates are required to have evidence of successfully completing a 30-minute written assessment paper covering the knowledge and understanding requirements of all three units of the qualification as the independent assessment component.

To achieve the qualification, candidates are also required to have evidence of successfully completing the following internally assessed components:

> A series of written tasks demonstrating knowledge and understanding across all three units of the qualification.

> Identify by palpation ten bony points, muscles and joint lines randomly selected by the assessor drawn from the practical syllabus of the L2TMI. To be successful candidates must be able to correctly identify six out of ten. Candidates are also required to describe and demonstrate a minimum of four out of six movements at joints (as contained within the practical L2TMI). The candidate must be able to successfully answer questions relating to the underpinning knowledge on both components. Candidates will use a live model for their demonstration, and will be assessed on these components for 15 minutes.

> Describe and demonstrate the SALTAPS testing routine on a live model. Aural questioning will be used to augment demonstration and test candidates’ knowledge and understanding. Candidates will be assessed on this component for 15 minutes.

The qualification is designed to enable each unit to be delivered inidviudally. However a holistic approach to delivery and the development of candidates' knowledge ensures a heightened understanding of injury recognition, the stages of rehabilitation and the practical applications required.
