The qualification offers candidates a route to employment as a sports coach in a specific sporting context. Candidates who have achieved the qualification and gained experience of working as a sports coach at this level in a particular sport would be able to progress to a Level 3 sport-specific coaching qualification or widen their employability by gaining further sport-specific qualifications at Level 2.

1st4sport complies with the SkillsActive Assessment Strategy, Evidence Requirements and requirements of the sport-specific Level 2 Technical Definition and Assessment Specification. Independent assessment will be through external verification procedures documented in ‘Recognised Centre Handbook', which were banked with QCA as part of the Submission to award NVQs. This publication also requires 1st4sport recognised centres to have robust quality assurance mechanisms in place.
Methods of assessment include: assessor observation, witness testimonies, authentic records of work, oral and written questioning and simulation where appropriate.
Candidates must complete all units in Group A in the context a recognised sport as determined by the requirements of the sport-specific Level 2 Technical Definition and Assessment Specification for Coaching, Teaching and Instructing. Currently this 1st4sport Level 2 NVQ in Sport, Recreation and Allied Occupations: Coaching, Teaching and Instructing is available in the context of Association Football.
