Qualification summary
The Principal Learning qualification aims to:
• Encourages learners to learn through experience of applying knowledge and skills to tasks or contexts including those that have many of the characteristics of real work
• Support equality and diversity by considering the needs of all potential learners, to minimise any later need to make reasonable adjustments for learners who have particular requirements.
• Develop a broad understanding and knowledge about a sector and/or related sectors (referred to as a line of learning);
• Develop the skills and attributes related to the chosen sector
• Encourage learners to develop and apply functional skills in mathematics, English and ICT at the appropriate level (Level 1 in Level 1 Diplomas, Level 2 in Level 2 Diplomas and Level 2 in Level 3 Diplomas);
• Encourage learners to develop and apply transferable personal, learning and thinking skills (in independent enquiry, creative thinking, reflective learning, team working, self-managing and effective participation);
• Meet sector specific aims relevant to principal learning, set out in the Accreditation Criteria for the specialised Diploma qualification for the relevant line of learning,
• Encourage learners to draw out and articulate lessons learnt (both generalised and specific)
• Encourages learners to plan, review and reflect on the their experience.
• Develop understanding of spiritual, moral, ethical, social legislative, economic and cultural issues, if appropriate to the subject or sector
• Develop understanding of sustainable development, health and safety considerations and European developments, consistent with international agreements, if appropriate to the subject or sector.

Principal Learning in Environmental and Land-based offers progression opportunities for future employment within the land-based sectors and related industries. The qualification will also provide opportunities for progression to general qualifications, further and higher education.
