Qualification summary

The aim of this NVQ in Health and Social Care is to deliver competence based training, relating directly to the National Occupational Standards, which have been developed jointly by Skills for Care and Development and Skills for Health.
This training enables staff in the health and social care sectors to be competent and skilled at delivering the quality services of care and support, as required by the Commission for Social Care and Inspections. This ensures that people who use these services are receiving the most effective level of support, enabling them to lead a more independent life.

This NVQ in Health and Social Care, at Level 4, offers progression for learners who wish to work in supervisory and managerial roles within the care sector. Also, it is suitable for managers already in post who are working in the wide range of care settings for adults and children and young people such as hospitals, residential care homes, day-care centres. Equally, it is applicable for domiciliary care providers who work with adults and children and young people as full or part time workers and volunteers.

Objectives:
•Enables learners to demonstrate competence when carrying out their responsibilities at work.
•Develops learners’ skills and knowledge in work activities relevant to their job role.
•Promote the development of higher level management skills, such as, those required to manage a service which achieves the best possible outcomes for the individual, or to assess the needs of carers and families.

There are many career opportunities in social work and other health and social care related professions. Hence, if appropriate, it is possible for learners to achieve a number of relevant units at Level 4 to suit their changing job roles. For example, a learner’s role could change from working with individuals with learning difficulties to caring for the elderly.

Independent assessment is via external verification procedures documented in 'ASET NVQ Centre Guidance 2005-2006', which was banked with QCA as part of the agreed Part 'A' Submission to run internal verification procedures specified by ASET.
Common assessment methods include: direct observation, witness testimonies, work products, questioning, reflective accounts, professional discussion, real work, APL and simulation.
