The LRSM Performance Diploma is designed to reflect day-to-day experience as a performer, whether amateur or professional. As well as demonstrating skills as a soloist, there is an opportunity to specialize as an orchestral player, chamber ensemble member or keyboard accompanist. The LRSM will act as a prerequisite to enter for the FRSM at the Associated Board, the highest Performance Diploma offered. The Associated Board's LRSM Diploma is acknowledged by music services and agencies throughout the world. It is compatible with systems of assessment widely applied in higher education and encourages lifelong learning, without restrictions on length of study or the requirement that the candidate is taught in an institution.

There are no aspects of the LRSM (Performing) that are assessed by anyone involved in the teaching process of the candidates – ie it is entirely assessed by Associated Board personnel. However, the Diploma Board that ratifies the work of the Associated Boards diploma examining panel is served by three independent verifiers, one of which is a performing specialist (instrument specific).

There are no guided learning hours appropriate for this qualification as it is not a taught course and is approached through self study.
This qualification has three mandatory units. Unit two has been split into two parts.
