The Associated Board's Diplomas provide an authoritative assessment framework for a wide range of musicians. The FRSM in Music Performance allows musicians to broaden their qualifications whilst encouraging a diverse approach to Playing music, and stimulating enjoyment and achievement through the progressive acquisition of skills, knowledge and understanding. The FRSM in Music Performance is designed to reflect day-to-day experience as a performer, whether amateur or professional, and to accommodate a variety of performance techniques.

The FRSM in Music Performance calls for a practical application of knowledge and understanding of directing a variety of different ensemble. TheFRSM Performance Diploma is designed to reflect day-to-day experience as a performer, whether amateur or professional. As well as demonstrating skills as a soloist, there is an opportunity to specialize as an orchestral player, chamber ensemble member or keyboard accompanist. The Associated Board's FRSM Diploma is acknowledged by music services and agencies throughout the world. It is compatible with systems of assessment widely applied in higher education and encourages lifelong learning, without restrictions on length of study or the requirement that the candidate is taught in an institution.

There are no aspects of the FRSM (Performing) that are assessed by anyone involved in the teaching process of the candidates – ie it is entirely assessed by Associated Board personnel. However, the Diploma Board that ratifies the work of the Associated Boards diploma examining panel is served by three independent verifiers, one of which is a performing specialist (usually instrument specific).

There are no guided learning hours for this qualification as it is not a taught course and approached through self-study.
This qualification has three mandatory units, unit 2 has been split into two parts.
  • A/501/0612 - An instrumental or vocal recital
  • R/501/0602 - To undertake a Viva Voce to demonstrate knowledge, approach and understanding
  • F/501/0613 - A Written submission addressing idiomatic features and performance issues connected with candidates Recital
  • Y/501/0603 - A Quick Study - performance of a short piece of unaccompanied and previously unseen music
