EQL Level 2 NVQ in Horse Care

Qualification summary

This award is designed for those working in Horse Care. Candidates must complete eight mandatory units which cover prepare and clean stables; maintain the health and well-being of horses; prepare horses for use; prepare and maintain horses for grazing land; prepare and provide non-ridden exercise and aftercare; load and unload horses under supervision; ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety; and maintain effective working relationships. Candidates must also complete one optional unit from a choice of seven.

On achieving NVQ Level 2 candidates can further their training and competence by progressing on to NVQ Level 3.

NVQ Level 2 also allows canadidates to have direct enty in to the EQL/BHS Stages exams at either Stage 2 or Stage 3. Candidates who have completed all the mandatory units can apply for entry to the Horse Knowledge and Care Stage 2 or 3, however to apply for the Riding at Stage 2 or 3 thay must have completed Unit 213 - Ride Schooled Horses. On achieving Stage 2 or 3 candidates can then apply for the BHS Preliminary Teaching Test should they wish to progress and pursue a career in teaching riding.

Holders of NVQ Level 2 should be able to obtain work as a Groom or Assistant Groom on any equine establishment, as they should posess the skills and knowledge required to care for horses under limited supervision.

Assessment is carried on a continuous basis either at the candidates place of work, or on an approved Assessment Location.

Assessment and Verification is carried out in line with the UKCG approved Assessment Strategy for the NVQs in Horse Care. The requirements of this document are written into the BHS S/NVQ Operational Handbook.
Candidates must complete all units in Group A, Mandatory Units.
Candidates must complete one unit from Group B, Optional Units.
