Qualification summary
This qualification covers activities within the motor industry that relate to fast fit technicians working on a wide range of vehicles in garages, dealerships and fast fit businesses.
The qualification covers the basic technical needs for today's motor industry:
All aspects of health & safety, maintaining positive relationships and good housekeeping
Removing and replacing of components from vehicle systems: engines (fuel & ignition systems), transmissions (gearboxes & final drives), brakes, steering, suspension and vehicle electrics (batteries, starting & charging)
Understanding of how the above vehicle systems work
Other skills that may be required are:
Identifying faulty components: engines, gearboxes, axles, batteries, alternators and starter motors
Repairing tyres and carrying out tyre related adjustments
Valeting vehicles

The IMI has adopted the assessment strategy as specified by Automotive Skills in full. Assessment is done in the form of on-line testing.
The IMI must stress thats it's training providers are free to use any valid assessment technique (as listed in the NVQ documentation) as appropriate to an individual's job role. IMI will not specify rigid assessment methods for each unit. Each piece of NVQ evidence is unique to an individual. Therefore it would be wrong to suggest exacting methods of assessment (unless specified by an NTO/SSC). Such instructions would go against the holistic approach to NVQs.
Qualification Accreditation Number 100/5530/7 provides pathways to the following qualifications:
IMI Level 2 NVQ in Vehicle Fitting Operations (General Vehicle Fitting)
IMI Level 2 NVQ in Vehicle Fitting Operations (Specialist Tyre Fitting)
Candidates must complete all units from Group A and four units from the chosen pathway.
There are no restrictions on unit combinations or pathways.
