IMIAL Level 3 NVQ in Vehicle Body and Paint Operations

Qualification summary

This NVQ is a work-based qualification that assesses the skills and knowledge that people in your job need to perform their job role effectively.

This motor industry qualification covers activities that relate to body repairers working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body repair shops.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a broad working knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

The qualification includes the following areas:
• Removing and Replacing Body Panels
• Repairing Body Panels
• Rectifying Vehicle Misalignment

You will demonstrate your skills and knowledge by collecting evidence of your work. This evidence is usually presented in a portfolio (however your approved centre may use an alternative method). Your assessor will advise you on how to generate, collect and present your evidence. You will also undertake IMI set ‘on-line’ multiple-choice tests.

This NVQ is for school and college leavers who wish to join the Body and Paint Operations sector in either Body Repair or Refinishing routes, or for employees of the industry who are seeking to enhance and/or demonstrate their experience and competence in their work role. (Following interviews with training providers, experienced staff will enter onto the NVQ programme at the level and route suited to their role and competence.)

This NVQ is an integral part of the IMI (Automotive Skills) Advanced Apprenticeship framework. Therefore candidates (normally aged 16-25) who are keen to build a career in the Body and Paint sector can progress onto this framework.

For some individuals the achievement of this NVQ (or the Advanced Apprenticeship) could also provide a useful recognition of professional competence to aid their step up from one job role to another, e.g. into supervisory and/or management roles. For others, it could prepare them for progression to or provide access to further FE, and/or higher education, for example;
• IMI  Level  3  Certificate  in  Automotive  Management
• IMI  Level  4  Diploma  for  Automotive  Technicians  (Light/Heavy  Vehicle  Route)
• Gain  credit  for  entry  onto  a  Higher  National  Diploma  and/or  degree.

The IMI has adopted the assessment strategy as specified by Automotive Skills in full. Assessment is done in the form of on-line testing.

The IMI must stress thats it's training providers are free to use any valid assessment technique (as listed in the NVQ documentation) as appropriate to an individual's job role. IMI will not specify rigid assessment methods for each unit. Each piece of NVQ evidence is unique to an individual. Therefore it would be wrong to suggest exacting methods of assessment (unless specified by an NTO/SSC). Such instructions would go against the holistic approach to NVQs.
