Qualification summary

The IMI National is designed to provide an enhanced learning programme to meet the future needs of the modern vehicle technician and master technician. The aim of the IMI National suite is to develop the necessary knowledge and understanding required by technicians and to provide progression opportunities for career development and further study.

The IMI National has 7 specialist routes; light vehicle, heavy vehicle, motorcycle, motorsport, auto-electrical, body fitting, body repair and refinishing. The technical aspect of the IMI National is based upon the essential knowledge of ASL’s Technical National Occupational Standards. The broader breadth of learning is facilitated by four contextualised Applied Units of Maths, Science, ICT, and either Electrical/Electronics or Vehicle Technology.

The IMI National provides individuals working in or hoping to join the motor industry with a broad and rigourous qualification which,
• Supports the ASL Apprenticeship framework
• Meets the requirements of higher education

This suite of VRQs, at levels 1-3, provides recognition of professional competence to aid individuals to step up from one job role to another, and/or provide access to further/higher education.

The technical units of this VRQ are an integral part of ASL Apprenticeship Frameworks and include the essential knowledge of the relevant route's NVQ. Therefore for those who gain employment and wish to continue with their studies, these VRQs offer the perfect step onto an ASL Apprenticeship programme.

The IMI National suite provides opportunities for progression in education and within the workplace to management positions, for example, Master Technician. Individuals can,
- gain a broader breadth of learning at levels 1-3, to bridge the gap in their existing
vocational qualifications
- progress to IMI Level 4 Diploma for Automotive Master Technicians
- progress to Management NVQs
- progress to the Automotive Retail Management Standards (ARMS),
- gain credits for related Higher Education programmes, for example a Foundation degree, BSc or BEng.

Both the Technical and Applied units of this qualification are independently assessed via online testing which is graded, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

The units of the IMI National are assessed using a combination of the following:
1. IMI on-line multiple choice questions (Applied and Technical units)
2. IMI devised external assignments (Applied units only)
3. IMI devised external practical assessments (Technical units only)
4. Centre devised assessments (Applied and Technical Units)

Note: The IMI National does not receive an overall grade, however the grades achieved for each of the Technical Units on-line test results and Applied Units are detailed in the record of achievement accompanying the student’s certificate. (See page 18 of guidance for full details.)
