IMIAL Level 3 Diploma in Transport Engineering Maintenance for Passenger Carrying Vehicles
Qualification summary
The purpose and aim this Transport Engineering and Maintenance VRQ (Technical Certificate) is to provide a national learning programme which reflects the underpinning knowledge required by craftsmen maintaining passenger carrying vehicles. This VRQ is based upon GoSkills National Occupational Standards for Transport Engineering and Maintenance, it:
•Provides specialist provision for individuals within the bus and coach industry, covering the requirements for 3 engineering functions of either mechanical, electrical or body cladding
•Meets GoSkills’ Apprenticeship frameworks Technical Certificate requirements
•Provides a standardised approach for the delivery and assessment of the NOS essential knowledge requirements
•Provides much of the underpinning knowledge for its corresponding NVQ
•Meets the need of both school & college leavers who wish to join the industry, and employees of the industry who are seeking to enhance and/or demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of their work role.
The qualification routes have been designed to aid the delivery of VRQs as learning programmes. Certain subjects lend themselves to be taught as a recognisable job function, as opposed to a vehicle area. (For example, inspection and maintenance would be disjointed and incoherent if taught separately in a PCV environment.)

This qualification offers the perfect step onto the NVQ programme for those who are employed, and wish to continue with their studies, as the underpinning knowledge meets many of the underpinning knowledge requirements of the corresponding NVQ.
This qualification forms an integral part of GoSkills Advanced Apprenticeship Framework which has a technical certificate requirement. Candidates can progress onto this Apprenticeship, or broaden their education and training in other ways from this firm base.
This VRQ can provide a recognition of professional competence to aid individuals to step up from one job role to another, e.g. into supervisory and/or management roles, or more responsible positions in engineering.
