This award complements the requirements of the outdoor industry Coaching and Instructor training programmes and allows both new and exisiting coaches to progress to their choosen coaching activity and be a valid coach with a valid instructor award. Without a current first aid certificate coaches and instructors cannot operate in this sector.

Within the field of first aid training this award could be a building block to expedition first aid training or an essential first step to becoming a self-employed ITC Provider or freelance first aid Trainer.
The course is assessed by practical demonstration of skills and knowledge at selected times throughout the course. Skill acquisition is both incremental and progressive beginning with demonstration of simple protocols developing to the application of outdoor protocols in a range of novel outdoor scenarios.
ITC Centres have the support services, in respect of an internal verification ability, in place that can perform the quality assurance procedures required by ITC.
ITC Providers are sole traders, or trainers/assessors working alone in an organisation, which at the time of application cannot easily fulfil the support services (internal verification) that perform the quality assurance requirements of ITC. Therefore ITC First Aid Ltd provides a verification function.

Both Centres and Providers are externally moderated during their annual verification visit when the External Verifier assesses course candidates and compares their assessment results against that of the Trainer/Assessor and Internal Verifier at a Centre and against the Provider when visiting that Provider.
The EV externally assesses and moderates a sample of candidates during their Centre visit, then scrutinises all verification and assessment evidence for that Centre for that year.
The EV externally assesses and moderates every candidate throughout an entire course, during the Provider annual visit. All assessment evidence for every course is scrutinised by the ITC Office for each Provider. For summary of EV function see attachment.
