Achievement of the ILEX Level 3 Extended Diploma would also mark the completion of the second part of ILEX's Level 3 training route for fledgling Legal Executives. Achievement of the ILEX Level 3 Extended Diploma in Law and Practice will enable candidates to proceed towards the Level 6 qualification, achievement of which then marks the completion of the academic part of becoming a Legal Executive and a Fellow of ILEX (candidates currently have to embark upon a period of qualifying employment before they can then become eligible for Fellowship of ILEX).
More generally, ILEX is well-known as a key player in the world of legal education. Many students use the ILEX route to qualifying as a lawyer to not only train as a Legal Executive, but also to qualify as a solicitor. Many existing Law graduates often use the ILEX route to train as a Legal Executive after completing Law degrees. ILEX is viewed by graduates as a particularly practical and cost-effective way to becoming a lawyer. Equally, ILEX (in conjunction with City & Guilds), is a key provider of law for non-lawyers. ILEX has qualifications at levels 2 and 3 for legal secretaries and vocational paralegals, which often act as introductory qualifications for students who wish to further study and become a Legal Executive.
Candidates must achieve the required combination of units for the ILEX Level 3 Diploma qualification, ie Unit 1, all mandatory Law units (units 2, 3, 4 and 5), 3 other units (2 of which must be Practice units) and the 2 Professional Skills units.
For the Extended Diploma, the candidate is then required to do two further units. In doing these two further units, the candidate must ensure that no Practice units are attempted without the student either already having achieved or attempting the corresponding Law unit.
Units of the Extended Diploma qualification will be used as a part of our transitional arrangements to assist candidates completing their existing (old) qualification, ie for those candidates not completing their existing qualification, units of the new Extended Diploma will be able to taken and, once achieved, used towards completion of the existing qualification.
ILEX has a number of existing exemption arrangements against its existing qualification, which, in the fullness of time, will have to be evaluated and, at least in principle, transferred across to its new qualification. Eg, at the moment, a candidate who has achieved a degree in Law will, if they wish to then train with ILEX, only have to complete those Legal Practice aspects of the current provision in order to achieve the necessary achievements to become a member of the Institute. In other words, ILEX exempts against the academic Law content of its current qualification. With the advent of its new qualification provision, ILEX will have to review these arrangements and, at least in principle, look to implant them within the new qualification structure.
Not applicable as ILEX is not formally within the footprint of any sector skills council or standard setting body
To achieve the Extended Diploma, candidates require 84 credits (ie 12 units).
The qualification structure below identifies the relevant combinations of units that make up the Extended Diploma qualification.
Candidates must do all the units in Group X (Mandatory group) and the appropriate units in their chosen pathway (any one of groups A to N)
