This qualification provides a general grounding in employability skills and the accompanying knowledge and understanding required to prepare learners for employment, which is the anticipated progression route. However, the qualification also provides a foundation and preparation for further learning and study, and there is considerable potential for progression into general or vocational/vocationally-related qualifications across a range of sectors at the same level or higher. The flexibility built into the qualification allows centres to contextualise the delivery to suit the intended progression route(s).

The units address a range of work preparation skills (job application, interview, working with other people, dealing with problems, dealing with people), essential knowledge and understanding (operating in a work environment, rights and responsibilities to others, organisational structures) and behaviours and attitudes (personal development, punctuality and reliability, dealing with conflict, adapting to change). This combination of learning and skills gives learners the confidence to progress and provides a sound foundation to build upon.
