To:·
* Develop a Level 3 qualification for youth work based on National Occupational Standards using the Qualification and Credit Framework specifications.
* Use this qualification as part of the Youth Work Training Board’s Coherent Training Route.
* Create coherent progression opportunities to higher education.
* Develop unit-based qualifications based on the knowledge, skills and competencies required for specific job roles.
* Test the potential for a Credit Accumulation and Transfer System in the youth work sector and allied professions.
* All units are designed to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and competence required to work with young people in a youth service setting.
Overall, it is hoped that the qualification will:
- Promote competence, confidence and skills
- Increase candidates’ knowledge of key aspects of youth work
- Build on candidates’ talents, interests and energies
- Underpin the importance of Child Protection in every aspect of youth provision
- Emphasise the important role of leadership within staff teams
- Encourage participants to consider undertaking further training.

Learners who successfully complete this Level 3 qualification could progress onto The University of Ulster’s Certificate in Youth Studies. Alternatively learners can apply for the BSc (Hons) Community Youth Work at the University of Ulster. The university will recognise the qualification but it does not guarantee that learners will get into the degree programme.

Practical Demonstration / Assignment
For the achievement of the NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Training for Youth Work the learner must achieve a total of 33 credits. The learner must take the two mandatory units totalling 15 credits; these two units are at Level 2 and Level 3. Learners must then achieve a further 18 credits from the optional units. A minimum of 21 credits must be achieved at Level 3, using both the Level 3 mandatory and optional units.
