This Level 1 qualification can provide progression to other ESOL qualifications at Level 2. By focusing specifically on English language skills needed either for entry into or for effective communication within the workplace, it not only provides opportunities for progression into employment but, by equipping learners with the language skills they need to operate effectively at work, also gives them an essential tool for promotion.

Task-based controlled assessment
This qualification is internally assessed using externally set assessment tasks and externally verified on a sample basis, the percentage of which is higher than the minimum requirements set out in the 'Statutory Regulations of External Qualifications 2004', Page 24.
Performance and written evidence is required to demonstrate that the candidate has achieved all of the Outcomes and Assessment Criteria for the 3 units. The evidence may be produced at different points throughout the Units, or towards the end of the Units when candidates will have had the opportunity to build language skills. Evidence is produced in response to a clear candidate brief. Candidates are expected to develop their skills in the broad vocational context of work and are expected to provide evidence in work related topics for each Outcome. All assessment tasks are practical and work-related. Centres who wish to design their own assessments should refer to the Assessment Exemplars to ensure a comparable standard. In addition to the individual assessment tasks at unit level, the material lends itself naturally to cross- skill assessment allowing candidates to be assessed holistically by demonstrating their knowledge and understanding across the 3 skills modes. SQA is currently developing additional cross-skill assessment task templates for specific work sectors. Each unit specification is accompanied by a parallel teacher support pack which includes a dedicated section entitled “Guidance on Approaches to Assessment”. This section includes samples of the kind of evidence a candidate is required to present and suggested circumstances/activities which lend themselves to producing such evidence. There is also guidance for candidates with disabilities or additional support needs.

Please see attached 'Unit Specification - ESOL for Work Level 1' Pages 3-18 & 'Assessment Exemplar Pack- ESOL for Work Level 1' Pages 3-39 (Pages 3-39 details an exemplar from one of the three units).
Candidates must complete all three units to gain the certificate.
