Growing plants

Unit summary

Most gardens both private and public have planted areas such as borders, shrubbery’s, specimen plants and fruit and vegetable gardens. For these areas to look good, a great deal of care and attention is needed to make sure that the ground is ready for planting. The plants found in gardens are usually grown at a nursery, where the potting of new plants is one of the main tasks. If you hope to be involved in looking after gardens or working at a nursery then this unit will show you how to prepare, plant and pot a variety of plants.

You will learn how to grow plants outdoors and in containers, how to prepare plants for planting and how to plant both potted plants and bare rooted plants so that they grow successfully.

You will need to be able to recognise the tools and equipment used for planting. You will learn what materials are required for the potting of plants by hand. This will include collecting materials and preparing the work area.
