Caring for crops
Unit summary
Most farmers grow crops. Some have only a few fields and therefore only grow grass and food for their animals, whilst others grow many different crops and sell them.
Growing crops on a large scale means farmers have to use machinery such as tractors, sprayers and combine harvesters, all of which need experts to operate them. There are also many jobs to be done which do not require machinery but are very important to the success of the crop.
This unit gives a basic introduction to crop growing. You will learn what is meant by cereal, fodder and root crops, when they are sown and harvested and what they are used for. You will learn how the ground is prepared for sowing, how seeds are sown and how the crops are harvested. You will need to know how and why we treat crops with fertilisers and chemical sprays as well as how to care for them by removing weeds by hand. You will also learn how crops are harvested and stored or processed.
If you would eventually become involved with growing crops this unit will help you to understand some of the processes involved in crop growing. You will be able to identify three crops, know when they are sown and harvested and what they are used for.
