Unit summary

Most gardens both private and public have planted areas such as borders, shrubberies, specimen plants and fruit and vegetable gardens. For these areas to look good, a great deal of care and attention is required in looking after the plants. If you hope to be involved in looking after gardens or plants at a nursery then this unit will show you how to care for a variety of plants.

You will learn about the care and upkeep of established plants and how to care for and maintain plants and planted areas. You will need to be able to recognise tools and equipment used in pruning and will learn when and how to prune for the best results. You will learn how to recognise when plants need watering and how much water to give them. You will also learn how to prevent weeds by mulching and how to control weeds using cultural methods. You will need to be able to recognise three plant pests and learn how to stop them from spreading.
