Caring for land
Unit summary
Most farm animals spend some time of their lives outdoors in fields which we call ‘being at grass’. Grass is a very important food for farm animals and farmers take great care of it. The farmer is responsible for making sure the livestock have plenty to eat and that they are safe and secure. The act of eating grass is called ‘grazing’.
This unit covers the care and maintenance of grass fields and how to check that boundaries (fences, ditches etc) are secure; that there is enough clean water and that the field is safe for livestock to graze. You will also learn about the length the grass must be for two classes of livestock, be able to identify when the grass supply is getting low and recognise what good quality grass looks like.
In addition to learning about ‘grass’ and ‘grazing’ you will develop an understanding of how to recognise the signs of good health in farm animals.
