Farm maintenance
Unit summary
Farms usually have several buildings that may contain livestock, machinery or be used for storing crops. There are often many paths, minor roads and yards and usually lots of fences on and around farmland and buildings.
Walls, doors and fences are types of structures. Yards, roads, paths and floors are types of surfaces. If these structures and surfaces are well cared for (maintained) they will look good and last a long time. The farm will look tidy, clean and well looked after.
This unit looks at the maintenance of farm structures and surfaces. If you want to work on a farm, this is an extremely important unit, it will help you to understand the importance of taking good care of the basic but very essential fixtures and give you the opportunity to develop the skills to carry out the maintenance they need.
You will learn how to clean and maintain different types of surfaces
and structures and how to recognise, prepare and use different
materials for preserving or coating them.
You will need to know which tools to use and how to use them safely
and correctly and how to clean and care for them before you put
them away.
You will also learn how to store materials and dispose of waste products safely and correctly.
Some of the tasks you learn will be part of a daily routine, others will be seasonal.
