Identifying pets

Unit summary

Small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs come in a variety of breeds and colours. Other animals such as hamsters, rats, gerbils and ferrets come in a variety of colours and different coat types such as rough coated, smooth coated, long coated or rex coated – this is called coat type.

Animals are often identified by their coat colour and it is important when working with small animals that you are able to recognise their coat colour, markings or coat type. It is also very important to be able to sex animals correctly. Some animals may not live happily in groups of the same sex, or mixed sex groups and mixing sexes of animals will also result in breeding others that may not be wanted.

If you would like to work in a pet shop then this unit is important, because you will be able to recognise colours, breed and sexes of animals.
