Lawn care
Unit summary
Most gardens both private and public have areas of grass called lawns. To keep lawns looking at their best they need to be cut and treated on a regular basis. If you hope to become involved in looking after gardens then this unit will show you how to look after lawns and keep them to a good standard. You will learn what a good lawn should look like and to improve it and keep it looking good. You will also learn how to decide when a lawn needs attention such as a cutting mower and to cut the lawn to give a professional finish.
You will need to be able to suggest what type of lawnmower should be used for the cutting of the lawn depending on the area of grass to be cut and what it is going to be used for. You will learn how to spike a lawn to aerate and improve drainage and how to remove moss and thatch to improve its appearance. You will need to be able to recognise weeds in a lawn and will learn how to remove them. You will also learn how to make a good edge on the lawn and around flowerbeds to leave a neat finish.
