Housing and care of farm animals
Unit summary
Most farm animals are kept indoors for all or part of their lives. We call this housing and it could be barns, sheds or indoor waiting areas. The housing must be safe and secure. Animals kept indoors must have enough clean bedding, food and water to keep them comfortable and healthy and they must be checked every day to make sure they are fit and healthy. Providing this care is called husbandry.
This unit looks at the basic maintenance of housing and providing food and water for livestock. You will learn how to clean, sweep, secure doors and gates, and check that the equipment is safe. You will also learn how to dispose of dung, urine, bedding and un-used feed. You will need to recognise feedstuffs and learn how to prepare and feed the correct amounts at the right times. You will learn how to provide clean water in containers or by checking the water supply in tanks or fixed baths. Whilst doing all these tasks you will learn to look for signs of good health, normal behaviour and other health and safety risks and hazards.
If you want to work with farm animals this unit is very important. It will help you to understand the basic needs of farm animals and some of the signs that tell us whether they are in good health. You will also be able to practice the skills needed to make sure that these animals are comfortable and healthy.
