Planting materials
Unit summary
This unit looks at ‘growing media’, both in commercial (nursery work /growing plants and crops) and amenity horticulture (garden maintenance and landscaping). ‘Growing Media’ is the name used to describe anything that a plant will grow in, such as soil and compost. Without the different types of growing media we would be unable to grow any plants and gardens would not exist, therefore this unit is very important. You will learn what the different types of growing media are, such as soil and potting composts. You will need to be able to list the materials used in different types of ‘growing media’ and how to measure, mix and store ‘growing media’ such as a propagation compost. You will also learn how to cultivate and prepare outdoor borders or beds for planting or seed sowing, to include digging, removing weeds and raking.
