Handling and moving animals
Unit summary
All livestock on farms need to be restrained or moved from time to time. The health and safety of the handlers and animals is very important so these tasks need to be carried out in a safe and responsible way and without causing too much stress to the animals.
The unit will help you to understand the natural instincts of farm animals and show you how to handle them safely. It looks at moving farm animals to new land, to another part of the farm or to new housing, holding them for treatments and loading and unloading them for transporting.
You will learn about the behaviour of farm animals and you will need to be able to pick out the correct animals and make sure they are fit to be moved. You will also learn hot to fit a halter and lead farm animals correctly.
You will help to move groups and individual animals and be able to make sure they are safe in their new surroundings.
You will learn how to safely load and unload animals and have some understanding of why we need to move animals and the risks involved.
You will learn the importance of planning a route before moving the livestock and how and what to communicate with other people so that everyone knows what they need to do.
