Background to chosen dance genre
Unit summary
To offer a study of dance genres in their historical and cultural contexts. Through study of significant dance artists and their work, both past and present, the Unit aims to give the student teacher a deeper understanding of the function of the art-form in society. Through a study of artistic, philosophical and occasionally ideological approaches of dance practitioners to their creative work, the student teacher can be made aware of how expressive intention is made manifest in dance work. In this way, the programme offers a clearly educational aspect of the study of dance where student teachers can, in turn, contextualize practical dance study for their learners.
