VRQ - Vocationally-Related Qualification
For information on the approval of qualifications for funding in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, see the links to DCSF, DIUS, DCELLS, DELNI and DENI below.
When undertaking a qualification that does not appear on the governments' lists as eligible for funding for specific age ranges, users must be aware of legal requirements. Not all qualifications are suitable for all age ranges.
There are countless opportunities for a Higher Sports Leader candidate to progress to further learning and/or qualifications as the leadership skills are transferable and often provide additional benefits in terms of personal and social development. The wide variety of skills and practical experiences that are gained through the Award allow candidates to develop into Leaders, teachers, sport specific coaches, event organisers and dedicated volunteers with experience of working with a wide variety of people (including, children, older people and the disabled). Some candidates decide to specialise in a particular area of sports delivery or prefer to work with particular client groups as a result of their involvement in the Award.
Every candidate will be observed leading practical leadership activities for small group of people by an Independent Witness. In most cases this will be the supervisor of the placement where the candidates are working towards their 30 hours of leadership experience. The Independent Witness is completely separate to the Centres and has no involvement in the delivery, assessment or verification of the qualification. The Independent Witness will sign the candidate's Log Book to verify that they have met the required level of achievement for the qualification. See the attached document on the role of the Independent Witness.
Candidates must complete all of the mandatory units in Group A and a minimum of two optional units from Group B.
