Qualification summary
All specifications in Leisure Studies should encourage candidates to develop broad skills, knowledge and understanding of the leisure industry. They should prepare candidates for further study, or
training in the leisure industry and related occupations. They should encourage candidates to:
a. develop an understanding of the nature, structure, scale, range and importance of the leisure industry within the UK and Europe
b. develop skills and techniques related to participation, leadership and organisation within the leisure industry
c. develop an understanding of the current issues, working practices and procedures of the leisure industry
d. develop an understanding of the importance of the customer to the leisure industry
e. recognise the contribution and impact of technology on the leisure industry and its potential effect on immediate future
f. develop an understanding and appreciation of the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle
g. develop an interest in leisure in a vocational context.

The qualification allows for a number of progression routes:
• Higher education: the Advanced awards provide a sound basis for progression to a range of HE courses, e.g. HND in Sports Studies or Leisure Management; HNC in Leisure and Tourism Management; Foundation Degree in Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Services; BA in Leisure Planning or Retail Management.
• Employment: the specification aims to maintain and support the recognised standards demanded for leisure industry education and training in order to meet the requirements of various leisure
industry sectors. A GCE in Leisure Studies provides a broad foundation for a wide range of employment options available in the leisure industry.
