Qualification summary

This qualification contributes to the promotion of professional standards in the security sector and the development of a fully qualified workforce of specialist operatives. The qualification is knowledge-based and covers the underpinning knowledge of the Role and Responsibilities of Security Officers (Unit 1), and underpinning knowledge of Communication Skills and Conflict Management for Security Officers (Unit 2).

The qualification is directly linked to employment as it is a pre-requisite for anyone wishing to work as a Security Officer to obtain a Level 2 licence-to-practice qualification, under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

In addition, the qualification provides a significant amount of knowledge, understanding and skills development that underpins occupational competence in the Security Guarding sector, as identified in the current accredited suite of National Occupational Standards for the sector, Security and Loss Prevention (SLP). The NOS include a pathway specifically for Security Officers, with units identified that are directly relevant to the Security Officer’s role.

Multiple Choice Examination
The only assessment method for this qualification is an externally set, externally marked multiple choice examination.
The NOCN Level 2 Award in Security Guarding is composed of a total of two mandatory units.
