Qualification summary

This qualification specifically aims to:

* develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the travel and tourism industry and the chosen specialist pathway if selected

* develop candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing their employability within the travel and tourism industry

* develop candidates’ ability to work autonomously and effectively in a travel and tourism context

* enable candidates to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in specialist areas of travel operations, tourism provision and development, and airports and airlines.

* encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that candidates will need to access further or higher education programmes or occupational training on a full-time or part-time basis

* encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that candidates will need to enter employment or enhance their current employment status

Further learning and/or qualifications
A candidate wishing to undertake further learning/qualifications may progress to:

* Level 3 qualifications part-time or full-time in further education, eg OCR Level 3 National Certificate/Diploma/Extended Diploma, AVCE, A Level

* higher level qualifications part-time or full-time in further or higher education, eg degree.

Work/employment
A candidate wishing to progress to employment in the travel and tourism industry may enter employment at practitioner (or trainee) level as a reservations sales agent within a call centre, a passenger service agent for an airline or ground handler, a tourism assistant within a Tourist Information Centre, an events organiser, or resort representative (age dependent).

Alternatively they may enter employment and undertake a related NVQ at a level appropriate to the job role, eg NVQ Travel Services (Leisure and Business Travel), NVQ Tourist Information Services, or enter employment and undertake other related occupational qualifications.

Portfolio of Evidence
The assessment methodology for the OCR Nationals was approved by the regulatory authorities as a suitable alternative to independent assessment, with external moderation offering the required quality control.

Each unit within this specification is designed around the principle that candidates will build a portfolio of evidence relating to progression towards meeting the unit assessment objectives.

The unit assessment objectives reflect the demands of the learning outcomes for each unit.

Performance at unit level is graded holistically, as Pass, Merit or Distinction, recognising that candidates may perform better in meeting the requirements of some objectives more than others.

All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by an OCR Visiting Moderator.
Candidates must complete all units from Group A plus fourteen units from Group B
