EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Engineering
Qualification summary
The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Firsts in Engineering have been designed to develop the knowledge,
skills and understanding required in the engineering sector and to focus on:
• providing opportunities for engineering employees to achieve a nationally-recognised Level
2 vocationally-specific qualification
• giving learners opportunities to enter employment in the engineering sector or to progress to
further education vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Nationals in
Engineering
• giving learners opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities
and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life
• providing education and training in the areas of electronics, maintenance and manufacturing
which is directly relevant to the changing needs of employees, employers and the
professions
• providing learners with the necessary knowledge and skills concerning health and safety,
the environment, legislation, and customer care in the engineering sector
• providing knowledge and skills which are relevant to the QCA key skills units (separately
certificated).

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Engineering permits the achievement of learner to progress:
• to NVQ Level 2 or 3 in a related sector
• to a Level 2 or 3 Diploma (Engineering)
• to a specialist qualification (such as the Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Engineering)
• to the workplace in a suitable role under supervision.

04 Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies
The qualification is assessed through internally set assignments and externally verified through National Standard Sampling. In addition centres go through an ongoing Centre Risk Assessment process to ensure the quality of provision and internal verification systems and practices.
The BTEC First Certificate in Engineering consists of two core units plus specialist units that provide a combined total of 180 GLH for the whole qualification.
