Qualification summary

The BTEC Firsts in Art and Design have been developed in the art and design sector to focus
on:
• education and training for those who work or are intending to work in the art and design
industry
• providing opportunities for those who work or are intending to work in the art and design
sector to achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 vocationally specific qualification
• providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific
qualification to enter employment in the art and design sector or to progress to higher
education vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National in Art and
Design
• providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal
qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design permits the achievement of learner to progress:
• to NVQ Level 2 or 3 in a related sector
• to a Level 2 or 3 Diploma (Creative and Media)
• to a specialist qualification (such as the Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design)
• to the workplace in a suitable role under supervision.

Portfolio of Evidence
The qualification is assessed through internally set assignments and externally verified through National Standard Sampling. In addition centres go through an ongoing Centre Risk Assessment process to ensure the quality of provision and internal verification systems and practices.
Candidates must complete all units in Group a plus any two units from Group B
