EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science
Qualification summary
The BTEC First Certificate and Diploma in Applied Science has been developed to focus on:
• providing opportunities to acquire technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding which are transferable and will enable individuals to meet changing circumstances, whether these arise from a shift in their own status or employment, or general changes in applied science practice, provision or environment
• providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment as a science technician or assistant practitioner, or to progress to other vocational qualifications such as BTEC Nationals in Applied Science
• providing opportunities for learners who are employed in the applied science industry or in an organisation that uses science to develop their underpinning knowledge and scientific skills
• developing the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners to meet the needs of the Applied Science sectors
• the role of the science technician or assistant practitioner, their relationship with the scientific community and their responsibilities towards the community and the environment
• providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major key skills and the wider key skills in context, such as improving their own learning and performance and working with others
• providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science permits the achievement of learner to progress:
• to NVQ Level 2 or 3 in a related sector
• to a Level 2 or 3 Diploma
• to a specialist qualification.
• to the workplace in a suitable role under supervision.

The qualification is assessed through internally set assignments and externally verified through National Standard Sampling. In addition centres go through an ongoing Centre Risk Assessment process to ensure the quality of provision and internal verification systems and practices.
Learners must complete both units from Group A plus four optional units from Group B.
