EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care

Qualification summary

The BTEC First Certificate and BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care have been developed to focus on:
• the education and training for those employed in a variety of types of work, such as in: animal welfare and rescue centres, pet shops, zoos and farm parks, veterinary centres, kennels and catteries and grooming parlours
• providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised Level 2 animal care qualification to enter employment or progress to further education or training such as the BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management or a similar related subject area
• developing the knowledge, understanding and skills required at this level in the animal care industry
• the role of the animal carer and the opportunities available within the animal care industry locally and nationally
• providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major key skills and the wider key skills in a science and technological context, such as improving own performance, working with others and problem solving
• providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

The qualification is assessed through internally set assignments and externally verified through National Standard Sampling. In addition centres go through an ongoing Centre Risk Assessment process to ensure the quality of provision and internal verification systems and practices.
The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care consists of 3 mandatory unit plus 3 units from a list of 11 optional units.
