Qualification summary

The OCR Level 3 Diploma for IT Professionals is unit based and has been designed to provide accreditation for the full breadth of essential knowledge, understanding and skills that would be needed by a competent employee. It is suitable for those who are studying in preparation for a role in the IT industry and for those who are already employed in roles in the IT industry and who wish to develop further knowledge and skills to support or extend their work activities.

In addition to the Diploma there are two pathways available for those engaged in the process of supporting ICT systems or developing software. The qualification has been designed to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the full range of functions involved in:

• system support including service delivery, planning and control, the installation of networks and operating systems, the installation and maintenance of applications, the testing of systems and the production of customer support materials. The qualification provides opportunities for learners to study towards system and network management in addition to being able to take units that are vendor specific.

• software development including the design of software, the testing of software and the production of customer support materials. The qualification provides opportunities for learners to specialise in one or more specific programming languages. All pathways provide opportunities for learners to take units that are vendor specific, from Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA and Oracle.

When undertaking a qualification that does not appear on the governments' lists as eligible for funding for specific age ranges, users must be aware of legal requirements. Not all qualifications are suitable for all age ranges.

Candidates who wish to extend their IT skills will be able to progress to either more extensive knowledge-based qualifications, competence-based qualifications for achievement in a workplace, or higher level or larger sized qualifications in this area. Possible progression routes include the OCR Diploma in ICT Professional Competence.

Three units, including the Mandatory Unit are externally assessed by OCR; two units will take the form of an externally set and marked on demand assignment and the third unit (L/101/9564), from Group D2, is externally assessed by OCR in the form of an electronic time-tabled test available March and June. Twelve units are locally assessed by the centre and externally moderated by OCR. Candidates will be required to demonstrate that they can meet all of the assessment objectives as stated in the specification. Assessment activities will take the form of practical activities that are locally devised. Thirteen units take the form of externally assessed electronic tests set by Microsoft Eight units take the form of externally assessed electronic tests set by Cisco Five units take the form of externally assessed electronic tests set by CompTIA Four units take the form of externally assessed electronic tests set by Oracle. There is one mandatory unit for all pathways.

There are three pathways available, each pathway contains core and optional units:
• General pathway
• ICT Systems Support pathway
• Software Development pathway.

To gain full diplomas the candidate must achieve a total of 8 units.

For a full general Diploma the candidate must achieve the mandatory unit (Group A), both core units (Group B1) plus 5 optional units from the general pathway (Group B2).

For the ICT Systems Support pathway, candidates must achieve the mandatory unit (Group A), both core units (Group C1) plus 5 optional units from the ICT Systems Support pathway (Group C2).

For the Software Development pathway, candidates must achieve the mandatory unit (Group A), the core unit (Group D1) plus 6 optional units from the Software Development pathway (Group D2).

The combination of accreditation number K/101/9569 Creating Software Components – Fundamentals of Java and accreditation number D/102/9368 Introduction to Java is not allowed.

  • B1 -  General pathway - core units
    For a full general Certificate, OCR Level 3 for IT Professionals, candidates must achieve a total of 6 units; made up of the mandatory unit (Group A), both core units (Group B1) plus 3 optional units from the general pathway (Group B2).
