EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Horticulture
Qualification summary
The BTEC First Certificate in Horticulture has been developed to focus on:
the education and training for junior technicians who are employed in a variety of types of
work, such as in: practical horticulture, nurseries, garden centres, landscaping, sports turf
providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific Level 2
qualification to enter employment as a practical worker or progress to further education
vocational qualifications such as BTEC First Diploma in Horticulture or a similar
related subject area
developing the knowledge, understanding and skills required at this level in the
horticultural sector
the role of the practical worker in the industry and the position of the horticulture industry
in the land-based sector
providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major key skills and
the wider key skills in a practical context, such as improving own performance, working
with others and problem solving
providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal
qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Horticulture permits the achievement of learner to progress:
• to NVQ Level 2 or 3 in a related sector
• to a Level 2 or 3 Diploma (Environmental and Land Based Studies)
• to a specialist qualification.
• to the workplace in a suitable role under supervision

Horticulture and Forestry
The qualification is assessed through internally set assignments and externally verified through National Standard Sampling. In addition centres go through an ongoing Centre Risk Assessment process to ensure the quality of provision and internal verification systems and practices.
The BTEC First Certificate in Horticulture is a 3 unit qualification. Learners complete 3 units from a list of 13 optional units.
