EDEXCEL Level 3 BTEC National Award in Hospitality

Qualification summary

Over the past five years, employment in the hospitality sector has increased faster than for the economy overall. But there remain significant skills gaps, particularly in the following areas: customer service; interpersonal skills; supervisory skills; finance; and employability skills. The BTEC National Award in Hospitality seeks to address these areas by encouraging the acquisition and development of these competencies prior to, or whilst in, employment in the hospitality industry.

There is no National Award currently but with the migration of schools from the AVCE in Hospitality and Catering, there is a need for an Award to replace the Single Award VCE and cater for the 16 – 19 college and school sixth form market. The introduction of a National Award to complete the suite would also boost registrations (possibly at all levels) as schools seek to introduce a vocational element into their sixth form offer.

The Award is particularly suitable for traditional school leavers wanting to take a vocational equivalent of one A-level alongside traditional academic subjects and also for people with experience of the hospitality industry but no formal qualifications who now wish to progress to managerial positions.

Internal verification:
Centres are required to have processes in place reviewing each assessor’s decisions to ensure that they are correctly interpreting and applying the standards set out in the specifications. The system used to do this is a matter for individual centres and Edexcel fully supports the use of the centre’s own quality assurance systems where this ensures robust internal standardisation.
Centres will refer to the BTEC NQF Level 2/3 (including Short Courses at
Levels 1–3) Handbook (updated annually). This updated information will also be found on the Edexcel website/Services for centres/FE Colleges and Schools.
External verification:
Edexcel will sample assessors’ decisions using sector-specialist external verifiers. For BTEC Firsts this process will follow the National Standards Sampling (NSS) protocol.
The learner work must have been internally assessed. Additionally, at least 50 per cent of submitted work must have been internally verified.
