Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Production Arts
Qualification summary
The BTEC National Award, Certificate and Diploma in Production Arts with Costume, Makeup, Set Construction, Stage Design, Stage Management, Theatre Technology, Arts Management, Design, Technical and Production pathways are designed as successors to the current Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Performing Arts – Production Qualification.
The revisions to the BTEC Nationals in Performing Arts – Production allows for the opportunity to introduce the new title of BTEC Nationals in Production Arts, which emphasises the importance of the production element of performing arts. The performing arts sector sees continual change in terms of techniques and technology used in all areas and particularly in those that involve the production and technical pathways, to counter this Edexcel has also updated the units and revised the content where appropriate.
Further information will be added to each of the units in terms of a unit abstract and also in relation to the delivery and assessment strategies. More detailed information in each of these sections will allow tutors to offer a more informed approach to the implementation of the individual units and therefore also to the complete qualification, whether it is a BTEC National Award, Certificate or Diploma.
The vocational context of the qualification is provided through the core units and additional optional units. This vocational nature of the qualification is underlined through links to the relevant Sector Skills Council.

A grading scale of pass, merit and distinction is applied to all units.
In Edexcel BTEC Nationals all units are internally assessed.
All assessment for BTEC Nationals is criterion referenced, based on the achievement of specified learning outcomes. Each unit has specified criteria which are to be used for grading. A summative unit grade can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction:
• to achieve a ‘pass’ a learner must have satisfied all the pass criteria
• to achieve a ‘merit’ a learner must additionally have satisfied all the merit criteria
• to achieve a ‘distinction’ a learner must additionally have satisfied all the distinction criteria.
Learners who complete the unit but who do not meet all the pass criteria are graded ‘unclassified’.
Awarding a qualification grade
The qualification grade will be calculated through the aggregation of points achieved through the successful achievement of individual units. The number of points available will be dependent on the unit grade achieved and the size of the unit as determined by the stipulated guided learning hours.
The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Production Arts consists of three pathway specific mandatory units plus specialist units that provide for a combined total of 720 guided learning hours (GLH) for the completed qualification.
