Qualification summary

The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Construction is a twelve unit 720 guided learning hour qualification. It is work related, and designed to provide a specialist-focussed, motivating and flexible programme of study. There is a choice of emphasis through the specialist units, which address the key areas of knowledge, understanding and skills required for learners undertaking a career within the construction industry. It provides education and training in technical and professional areas that are directly relevant to the changing needs of construction employees, employers and professions, together with knowledge and understanding of the key issues of sustainability and health, safety and welfare within the construction industry. The qualification is designed to relate to the CIC National Occupational Standards for the construction and built environment sector, and is broadly equivalent to two GCEs. Some learners may wish to extend their programme through the study of a related GCE, a complementary NVQ and an apprenticeship, or another qualification.

For learners who are already in employment within the sector, or who wish to prepare for entry into employment and have decided to follow a particular specialism, the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Construction provides career development or enhanced employment opportunities.

For mature learners the BTEC National Certificate can extend their experience of work. It is a suitable qualification for those wishing to change career or move into a particular area of employment following a career break.

The qualification provides opportunities for learners to develop and evidence knowledge and skills that are relevant to the QCA key skills units.

Learner options for progression from the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Construction could be into a specialist area of employment in the industry, where they might take professional body examinations or complete an NVQ and apprenticeship. Alternatively, learners could continue on to complete a National Diploma, either in construction or in a related sector such as civil engineering or building services engineering.
The qualifications may also be suitable for mature learners who wish to gain a qualification to consolidate a period of work within the sector, or as a qualification for those wishing to move into the sector following a career break.

Internal verification:
Centres are required to have processes in place reviewing each assessor’s decisions to ensure that they are correctly interpreting and applying the standards set out in the specifications. The system used to do this is a matter for individual centres and Edexcel fully supports the use of the centre’s own quality assurance systems where this ensures robust internal standardisation.
Centres will refer to the BTEC NQF Level 2/3 (including Short Courses at
Levels 1–3) Handbook (updated annually). This updated information will also be found on the Edexcel website/Services for centres/FE Colleges and Schools.
External verification:
Edexcel will sample assessors’ decisions using sector-specialist external verifiers. For BTEC Nationals this process will follow the National Standards Sampling (NSS) protocol.
The learner work must have been internally assessed. Additionally, at least 50 per cent of submitted work must have been internally verified.

For the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Construction learners must complete all the units in Group A and B plus six optional units from Group C that provide for a combined total of 720 guided learning hours.
