Qualification summary
This qualification specifically aims to:
* develop candidates' knowledge and understanding of art and design
* develop candidates' skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations, thereby enhancing employability within art and design
* develop candidates' ability to work autonomously and effectively in a art and design context
* enable candidates to develop knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of art and design, and demonstrate the skills needed to participate in art and design environments and art and design practice
* encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding which candidates will need to access further or higher education programmes or occupational training on a full-time or part-time basis
* encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding which candidates will need to enter employment, or enhance their current employment status
* promote interaction between employers, centres and candidates by relating teaching and assessment to real organisations.

For candidates who would like to undertake further learning/qualifications may progress to:
* Level 3 qualifications part-time or full-time in further education eg OCR Level 3 Nationals, AVCE, A Level
* higher level qualifications part-time or full-time in further or higher education eg foundation degree
A candidate wishing to progress to employment in the art and design industry may enter employment at practitioner (or trainee) level and undertake further job-related training eg NVQ.

The assessment methodology for the OCR Nationals was approved by the regulatory authorities as a suitable alternative to independent assessment, with external moderation offering the required quality control.
Candidates must complete all units from Group A and eight units from Group B.
