Qualification summary

The qualification is designed to develop and assess functional Mathematics at Level 2 as determined by the functional skills standards Level 2. The qualification and assessment are intended to enhance skills application and deployment across a range of contexts. The functional skills qualifications will provide a platform to further achievement through the development of fundamental, applied skills in key subject areas. The knowledge, skills and problem-solving approaches contained within the qualification provide tools that can be utilised in work, life and further learning.

This qualification will encourage learners to demonstrate their mathematics skills and are essentially concerned with developing and recognising the ability of learners to apply and transfer skills in ways that are appropriate to their situation. Functional skills are recognised as vital to learner’s personal development, increasing both confidence and effectiveness.

FS qualifications are designed from E1 – L2 to ensure clear progression pathways and personal development opportunities. The levels are mapped across the relevant National Curriculum levels, the key skills ‘Communication’ (for example) and ‘adult literacy’ (for example) standards, as well as complying with the level descriptors for positioning units within the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). This will ensure that learner achievement is clearly understood by both the learner and audiences outside of the education environment.
