• Understand aspects of personal development, and the health, social care and early years sectors through investigation and evaluation of a range of services and organisations.
• Develop a critical and analytical approach to problem-solving within the health, social care and early years sector.
• Examine issues which affect the nature and quality of human life including an appreciation of diversity and cultural issues.
GCSE double award specification in health and social must additionally enable learners to:
• Develop their awareness of the influences on an individual’s health and well being.
• Understand the importance of motivation and support when improving health.

This GCSE course enables students to broaden their Key Stage 4 education and provides a basis for progression to GCE Health and Social Care. It also provides students with an insight into the health, social care and early years sectors by providing a foundation for vocational training and employment.

Task-based controlled assessment
Written Examination
This specification comprises one external assessment and one controlled assessment.
SA2 The external examination lasts 1 hr 30 mins and includes short-answer questions and structured questions that require extended writing. All questions are compulsory.
The controlled assessment (SA1) requires candidates to plan and carry out investigations and tasks in which they:
• analyse issues and problems;
• identify, gather and record relevant information and evidence;
• analyse and evaluate evidence; and
• make reasoned justifications and present conclusions.
