Trinity Guildhall Level 3 Advanced Graded Examination in Music Theory/Literacy

Qualification summary

The aim of Trinity Guildhall’s graded examinations in music theory/literacy is to provide a series of qualifications that offer progression for students of music from beginner level up to a standard of proficiency and artistry that would be appropriate for entry to higher education. This represents a normal route for those wishing to become professional musicians. All musicians, however, (except those working exclusively in an aural tradition) need to acquire an understanding of music notation and the elements of musical language. These examinations provide a way of doing this in a logical, structured manner.

Preparation for these assessments encourage musical understanding, develop high levels of musical perception, creativity, knowledge and understanding, and reward progress and achievement in this area. This approach remains a popular and successful pattern of training for composers and arrangers, but it is used by all musicians who need to further their understanding of musical language and conventions.

This submission covers changes made to Grades 6 to 8 of the suite (amendments to the first five grades were accredited in 2006). There is a greater opportunity for creative work and less focus on understanding ornaments etc. We expect these assessments to appeal to non-classical musicians as well as students of classical music who have previously been the traditional base for these qualifications.

The Trinity Guildhall suite of graded music examinations encourages candidates to evidence their achievement across the NQF from Level 1 to Level 3.

These examinations also offer progression through the grades to a level of proficiency and artistry that would be appropriate for entry to higher education—either music college or university music department and onwards to professional work. The delicacy with which the grades are incrementally defined, properly related to the individual learner, enable a teacher and candidate to prepare for whichever grade most closely matches the learner’s current and anticipated level of development.

The pattern of progression through the grades varies according to individual choice. Some candidates choose to progress through the sequence from grade to grade, others choose to skip grades. Depending on the ability of the learner and the purpose of assessment, every grade is a potential exit point.

Graded music examinations are included within the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service's (UCAS) Tariff scheme. These examinations contribute towards a student's score of UCAS points, when he or she applies for entry to UK higher education. The UCAS Tariff assists admission tutors to make broad comparisons across applicants with different types and sizes of qualifications.

Music conservatoires often specify a pass at grade 6 or above as useful evidence for entry to their higher education courses. Graded music qualifications provide a progression route to Trinity’s and other awarding bodies’ accredited higher-level diplomas in music.

These qualifications test skills and knowledge in the specific area of music theory/literacy by means of a timed written examination conducted under formal examination conditions and marked by external examiners. Each grade is a single unit qualification.
