When undertaking a qualification that does not appear on the governments' lists as eligible for funding for specific age ranges, users must be aware of legal requirements. Not all qualifications are suitable for all age ranges.
The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is a successful and unique qualification that makes a significant contribution to the national educational provision in Art and Design. This is a diagnostic experience for students, enabling them to make informed decisions about where their future practice may lie in terms of specialism. The course is also responsible for value added elements within HE in Art and Design. Students are clearer about their professional destination and degree choices after FAD, resulting in better retention rates and improved success rates – of ultimate benefit to student employability and the Creative Industries.

Unless there is evidence of either AP(E)L or APL, learners are expected to have completed Units 1 - 6 in order to progress on to Unit 7.
The qualification comprises 7 units. 6 units are at level 3 and the final graded unit at level 4. The full qualification comprises 120 credits in line with an HE stage.
