Cambridge International Level 1 /Level 2 Certificates are general qualifications that enable candidates to progress either directly to employment, or to proceed to further qualifications.
This syllabus provides a foundation for further study at levels 2 and 3 in the National Qualifications Framework, including GCSE, AS and A level GCE, and Cambridge pre-U qualifications.
Candidates who are awarded grades C to A* are well prepared to follow courses leading to level 3 AS and A level GCE Geography, Cambridge Pre-U Geography, or the Cambridge International AS and A level Geography.
The qualification is assessed using independent and holistic assessment.
All Cambridge International Level1/Level2 Certificate syllabuses follow a general pattern. The main sections are: Aims; Assessment Objectives; Assessment; Curriculum Content.
The Cambridge International Level1/Level2 Certificate in Geography is assessed through 4 components. The assessments all take place at the end of the two-year course and a single grade is awarded.
Candidates take three Papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2 plus either Paper 3 or Paper 4. All candidates are eligible for the award of grades A* to G.
In Paper 1, candidates must answer three questions from a choice of six, one from each of the three themes. Questions are structured with gradients of difficulty, are resource based and involve problem solving and free response writing.
Paper 2 is mainly skills-based and will test the ability to handle various ways of depicting geographical information. One question will be specifically based on a large scale topographical map of a tropical area.
Paper 3 is internally assessed coursework consisting of two assignments, set by the Centre, each consisting of 1200 to 1500 words. Only teachers approved by CIE for this task may undertake school based assessment.
Paper 4, alternative to coursework, is a written paper where candidates are set a series of tasks relating to one or more of the syllabus themes. Methods used to process and present data will also be tested.
Candidates with visual impairments may have difficulty in demonstrating skills related to analysis, interpretation and evaluation of geographical information including maps, 3-D and colour images.
