The Cambridge International Level1/Level2 Certificate in Music is assessed through three compulsory components. The assessments all take place at the end of the two-year course and a single grade is awarded.

All candidates are eligible for the award of grades A* to G.

Component 1: Listening (maximum 75 minutes). This paper is based on a recording supplied by CIE. The questions are short answer or multiple choice and will test the candidate’s understanding and perception of the music. Candidates will be expected to follow and complete/skeleton scores or diagrams provided.

Component 2: Performing. This will consist of prepared performances of the candidate’s own choice, all of which have to be recorded. Candidates must offer singing or playing individually and in an ensemble.

Component 3: Composing. Candidates must submit two compositions, either contrasting in character or written for different forces. Each must be recorded on cassette tape or CD. One composition must be written in a western, tonal style and be fully notated using staff notation. The score must be submitted with the recording. The other piece is notated in a form appropriate to the music.
